Fiberglass Entry Door

Stained or smooth painted, which will you choose?

Fiberglass entry doors are my favorite exterior door category for a few reasons. The obvious ones are that fiberglass will never rust and it resists denting much better that steel so your door remains solid and mar free for years to come. Beyond that it gives you the flexibility to opt for a smooth paintable skin or a deeply engrained surface perfect for realistic wood look staining. Which ever your choice you will find a vast selection of door styles as well as door system combinations.

When looking for a stainable fiberglass door you will now find available products that go beyond the standard inset panel styles. New products offer raised features on the surface to create an even more realistic natural wood look. Combine the more realistic panel looks with fabulous glass options, throw in a gel stain finish and you will have a beautiful door that you can be proud of for years to come.

As with all other standard size exterior doors, fiberglass exterior doors are available in an 1-3/4” thickness and come in the following heights, 6’8”, 7’0”, and 8’0” tall. When making the choice to install a fiberglass entry door it is important to remember the inherent maintenance that goes with these doors. You will find that every fiberglass door manufacturer recommends the door be resealed every couple of years to avoid surface appearance issues. This is a concern that has to be addressed both with fiberglass and real wood doors and is the price you will pay to maintain that real wood look.

The staining process in a nutshell. You will need to prep and clean the surface with mineral spirits before applying a gel base stain. Staining is a two step process since the stain does not actually absorb into the surface, so you will wipe of the first coat leaving stain in the graining indents and then once dry apply a second smooth even coat that is not removed. I caution you to follow the manufacturer’s directions rather than my simple overview to assure the look you want to achieve. You will finish by coating your door with an exterior water-based polyurethane finish. This is the same product you will use to recoat your door as needed in the future.

Be sure and read my section on the top 10 things to know when selecting a new entry door system to avoid heartaches and headaches.
