How to turn an old afghan into a mini slip cover for your sofa cushion

by Lori W.
(Kennewick, WA)

For those of you, like myself, who has an old sofa, love seat, or lounger and their covers are starting to rip, tear, and/or shred, then here is a great way to cover the seat in an interesting and potentially decorative way.

This quick fix requires just one thing: 1 afghan or quilt. I don't suggest using anything antique or brand new. This will be used for everyday sitting and lounging. Make sure the Afghan, Quilt, or Blanket used is large enough to cover your cushions entirely. For a Lounger, a Lap-sized afghan will work, for a love seat, no smaller than a Twin sized cover, and a full Sofa, no smaller than a Double or Full-Size cover.

Now, Center your afghan to the cushion as well as you can. Doesn't have to be perfect, just mostly even. Tucking in the short sides first, run the blanket's edge smoothly under. With the closest long-edge corner to you, let it fold naturally in as you smooth the short end to the back of the chair. This will make a "Mitered" corner. Now tuck that long corner by smoothing from that corner toward the center but stopping just before the next short edge.

Do this for all 4 corners, starting from the short-edge working toward long.

This will make your comfy chair have a little personality while hiding those ugly rips.
