First I will mention that in this section when I refer to a door system it means a combination of door and frame, this could be a single door or combined unit with sidelights or transom. I typically will not refer to a door slab alone because it is so rare to try and retro fit a new door slab into an old frame. The most common problems will be hinge alignment and the knob hole placement since no two fabricators route hinge notches at exactly the same settings.

Basic steel door systems are typically available in a 1-3/4” thick slab.

They come in 6’8”, 7’0”. and 8’0” door heights. You will find a variety of edge designs, some use wood edge others all steel wrap.

The steel edge is considered superior since it is stronger and less likely to be damaged, but it must have a thermal break to not conduct cold transmission to the inside. Ask if your new door has a solid lock block built into the slab, this is a sign of a higher quality door.

Door skins are rated by gauge and the lower the number the thicker and stronger the skin. So a 24 gauge door is heavier than a 25 or 26 gauge door.

Most modern manufacturers are offering a lifetime warranty on their better steel doors this is value added but make sure they include a frame saver frame so this component does not rot causing you to need to replace the door in the future.

One last thing I will do here is to encourage you to read my section on the top 10 things to know before buying a new entry door so you will know the other features common to all exterior doors and the information you need to be armed with to find the door best suited to your needs.
